Your baby's head should be tilted head-down in the uterus. If you are
having a boy, his testes have probably descended. Your female baby's
ovaries will remain above the pelvic brim until after birth. In these
final weeks of pregnancy, your baby will produce greater amounts of the hormone
cortisone from the adrenal glands. This hormone will enable your baby's
lungs to mature in anticipation of his first breaths of air. Your baby
weighs about six pounds and six ounces now. His or her length is
approximately 13 inches from head to bottom.
As your cervix is dilating, you
may lose your mucus plug during this time. This is what created a seal for
your uterus, keeping the baby free from infection. The mucus plug is a
thick, yellow looking substance that may have tinges of blood in it. The
next time you urinate, which is quite frequent now, you may just see the plug in
the toilet. You can lose your mucus plug any time from now to just before
delivery.
