Prolapsed Cord

If at any time you see a loop of umbilical cord coming out of your vagina, you have a prolapsed cord. The cord will appear shiny bluish gray and will be protruding from your vagina. This is an emergency situation in which the baby’s oxygen can be cut off. Get down on your knees and place your chest to your legs. Place your head to the ground and have your bottom up in the air. Do not put any pressure on the cord, but if it is protruding, your partner can gently place a clean and warm wet towel on it. If an ambulance can reach you quickly, call 911. If you can get to the hospital faster driving, stay in this position even on the way to the hospital. If you are not fully dilated, you will have an emergency cesarean delivery. If you are completely dilated, the hospital staff may attempt a vaginal delivery with forceps or vacuum extraction
