The federal National Toxicology Program has released a
report indicating that the chemical bisphenol A may cause hormone related
problems, including early puberty and even precancerous tumors.
How does this affect you? This very chemical, BPA, is
found in baby bottles. Additionally, the water bottle you are drinking from
during your pregnancy may also contain this chemical.
There is a common worry that exposure to BPA can effect
your unborn baby both neurologically and behaviorally. Additionally, your baby
or child is at the same risk, if this is indeed found true.
Groups such as the American Chemistry Council argue that
there is no significant evidence that bisphenol A effects people adversely.
Currently, the FDA has no plans to ban BPA in plastics.
Yet Canada has already taken the leap and labeled this chemical as dangerous.
As a mother, you are fortunate to have a choice regarding
what type of the sippy cups, baby or water bottles you will use. There are BPA-free
baby bottles on the market, and glass baby bottles serve as an alternative as
well.
With the controversy continuing regarding the safety of
plastics, why not avoid them, simply to ease on the side of caution? Your child
will remain safe, and you certainly won't be sorry.
